ABOUT THE ENSEMBLE
Chopslaughter was formed in 2003 with the intention of providing a distinct, seldom-heard trio persona, taking the liberty to eliminate the traditional role of drumset in the jazz ensemble. What has come to be is a sound of unparalleled beauty, as the trio explores individual repertoire from within, as well as creative possibilities from the classical and popular repertoire.
Using Mahler, Copland and Bach as inspiration for a portion of their material, the trio addresses the classical forum with care as they use melodies and chords from the composers, then contribute a unique thumbprint through improvisation and formal structure.
Popular music also serves as inspiration for the group, with such diverse influences as The Who, Sigur Rs, and Andrew Lloyd Webber providing material on this release. The ensemble here again maintains the musics spirit, while adding fresh and innovative ideas to spur the music forward.
ABOUT THE MUSICIANS
Dan Gaynor, piano, has recorded a duo CD with Glen Moore of the ensemble Oregon, and with the up-and-coming Barbara Luschs latin ensemble. He performs regularly with Nancy King and Dan Schulte, in addition to several other Portland-area jazz groups. Dan has also worked with vocalists Robert Moore and "Sweet Baby" James, saxophonists David Valdez, Rob Scheps, guitarist John Stowell, bassists Essiet Essiet and Neil Swainson and percussionist Bobby Torres and is the musical director of the Lawrence Williams Project.
Lars Campbell, trombone, has appeared on the latest releases of Pink Martini, Pep and the Bottle Blondes, and Rubberneck. He performs on such varied stages as the Oregon Symphony, the Montreal Jazz Festival, and in jazz clubs throughout Portland, and has appeared with the orchestras of Arturo Sandoval and the Temptations. Lars is co-founder of the newly created Portland Jazz Orchestra, which he operates with Charley Gray.
Nick Kahl, bass, continues to challenge audiences with his bold compositions. His works have been performed by Tomas Svoboda, the Trillium Brass Trio and many others. He has appeared as bassist with Joe Lovano, Dave Douglas and Tony Malaby.
