Cirque du Singe Bris, known better by its English translation Circus of the Shattered Monkey is perhaps one of the most revolutionary ideas to be applied to the underground music scene.
It developed just over two years ago in a small Cambridge, MA art gallery and has since grown to being presented in six different states and in reputable rooms from The Knitting Factory, NYC all the way up to Club Metronome in Burlington, VT. Its mission is to be a safe haven for distinct and out there performers. Everywhere it goes it showcases artists from its rotating cast of monkey enough acts in a whirlwind presentation of what the show likes to call eclectic excellence.
It schedules five acts a night and then thrown into that mix is their house band, Hypaspace, performing in between sets and the shows producer Rich Van Vleet hosting the evening like a crazed preacher man.
The constant sermon from this descendent of the mad genius 70s rocker Captain Beefheart, is staging the statement of how quality talent in music still exists in this modern era and how its being overlooked and supplemented with what he consistently says the pretty voices of those otherwise talent less American Idol pawns, big breasted divas singing songs that sound more like commercials and mass produced bands with cookie cutter sounds designed for a ten minute shelf life.
Le Cirque: The Soundtrack is the recently released CD that gives a prime sampling of what Circus of the Shattered Monkey is all about. It has on it the core group of performers that make up the show as well as Desolation Circus a piece written and performed by the internationally acclaimed, award-winning poet William James Austin being backed with music from Hypaspace. Austin wrote the piece being inspired by the contents of the CD and it serves as an awesome intro to the 80 minute 20 track audio journey that a listener is about to embark on.
This CD is an amazing tapestry of sound and with one listen, it starts giving proof in what Van Vleet is preaching. Every artist on this CD has that special something to offer and its arranged in a way where the surprises never stop coming. It is bound to start making people aware of the performers that are on it and enclosed in the CDs liner notes are links to find out more about each and every one of them, as well as short descriptions of how Van Vleet found them all.
Le Cirque: The Soundtrack is also a fundraiser for fighting a dismal disease known as interstitial cystitis better known as IC, with $1.00 of every sale being donated to the Interstitial Cystitis Association (ICA). IC is a condition that very few people know about and it brings about total hell for its sufferers. Its almost fitting for a show thats promoting virtually unknown performers to be backing a disease that so few know of.
