Description
A native of Lafayette, Louisiana, Darrel Andrews, composer/songwriter began his music studies on the Bb Trumpet as a junior in high school. Instruction and practice were sometimes done outside after hours, weather permitting under large oak trees. After graduating from Southern University with a B.S. Degree in Music Education, Andrews started the band program at Carroll High School in Monroe, Louisiana, where he remained until retirement in l979. During the '70s, the late Ray Charles sponsored a recording session of seven of Andrews' tunes, and two were recorded by Bobby "Blue" Bland. Later, Andrews received a Masters Degree in music from VanderCook College of Music in Chicago, Ill. During his 28 years as Band Director, he wrote many original compositions which were used for half-time shows. Because of recent interest in a tune called "Spider Soul", recorded by Andrews on a 45rpm in 1971, he decided to re-release these tunes along with others that were written during the '60s and '70s.
Since retirement, Andrews has written many orchestral works that have been performed by the Shreveport Symphony Orchestra, Marshall Symphony Orchestra, and the Acadiana Symphony Orchestra of Lafayette, LA. He also supplied music for a drama entitled "Attica 7" dealing with prison reform, which was presented on the campus of University of Louisiana at Monroe.
