Description
How might a young Jerry Lee Lewis make it happen in the 21st century? Taking inspiration from the Godfather of rock piano, Dave Adler endeavors to sound out an answer with his debut CD release, Free Upright Grand (Roundlight Music). His sonic retort is resoundingly clear: distort the instrument, run it through various echo, reverb, and other sound altering effects, and attack melodically with rapid fire arpeggios and lush choral beds. Adler infuses both solo and accompanied explorations with unabashed abandon, striving to reconcile the traditional medium of acoustic piano with the amped up sensibilities of a modern world. Joined by long time collaborators Gordon Ranney on bass and Gregg Rullman on drums, the result is a mind-bending, multi-timbered tour-de-force; if Bela Bartok, Jimi Hendrix, and Keith Jarrett had a Vulcan mind meld and made a piano record, it might sound something like this.
Dave Adler grew up in Madison, Wisconsin and began his formal musical training with piano lessons at age four. In college he played with James Browns original funky drummer Clyde Stubblefield, and served as musical director for the improv based troupe ComedySportz.
After graduating from the University of Wisconsin, Adler tapped into Chicagos wonderful world of improvisational theater and comedy. Serving as musical director for Second City, the Annoyance Theater, and ImprovOlympic, he composed and performed live accompaniment for literally hundreds of shows. Tours and appearances included the Southern Comfort Comedy Challenge, the Dublin Theater Festival, and two weeks of concerts in Iceland with former Sugar Cubes drummer Siggi Balderson. During this period Dave also performed with Robert Klein, played on Willy Porters Dog Eared Dream (Private Music/BMG), and contributed music to HBOs sketch comedy series Exit 57th.
Next, Adler completed USC's acclaimed graduate composition program specializing in scoring for motion pictures and television, after which he scored his first feature film, Fatty Drives The Bus (Troma). Additionally he composed and performed the music for the pilot and first season of Comedy Centrals acclaimed weekly sketch comedy series Upright Citizens Brigade.
Adler continued to write and produce; projects included underscore for yesterdayland.com, a 70's centered retro-style website overseen by Danny DeVito's Jersey Films, and string arrangements for Willy Porters Falling Forward and subsequent Self Titled CDs (Six Degrees). He also produced, performed, and independently released Let My People Go-Go, a collection of traditional Hebrew folksongs rendered via dance/techno arrangements.
Adler then teamed up with LA based lounge savants Richard Cheese & Lounge Against The Machine. Serving as musical director and arranger, the group's Sinatra-styled renditions of alternative rock hits drew critical praise, national airplay, and record setting crowds at live appearances across the country. Highlights included appearances on NBC, MTV, FOX, and CNN, as well as a spotlighted big band arrangement in Universals popular Dawn Of The Dead remake.
Adler followed with the scoring of his second feature, Boricua. Written and directed by Marisol Torres, the film premiered at New Yorks Tribeca Film Festival and received national distribution through Screen Media/Universal.
Currently Adler divides his time between Madison and New York; recent commercial clients include Mattel, The Green Bay Packers, and Apple Computer. His keyboard work can be heard on Willy Porters Available Light (Weasel Records), which he co-produced with the artist.
