This very well may be the most unique, interesting, and best music youll hear this year and for some to come. Bending genres and blending enough Beatnik swagger and harnessed recklessness to stir up both Ginsberg and Kerouac, this L.A. collective lays down a foundation of seamless and cool drum and bass perfectly tamed into a dark seedy ambiance by edgy trip jazz sax and flute. Vocals are sung, spoken and/or rapped, the group boasts four vocalists, and the entire mix of elements combines with a classy delivery and production to create a clearly vital and relative statement.

DJ Monkey serves up spoken-word poetry atop funk, hip-hop, rock and jazz. While there is plenty going on in the nine-pieces grab bag, this acts output is accessible. The music leans on upbeat rhythms and vocal harmonies to accompany thoughtful messages. Add to this Lil Tip Toes rapid-fire rapping, and the ensemble takes on a Jurassic 5/Roots vibe. In final summary: (DJ Monkey) is..powerful, original and provocative.
