Description
A self proclaimed "mainstream experimental" outfit, The Dunes sings of "human beings and human themes". Their honest songwriting approach, soaring anthem like choruses and their belief that "the song is king" has served them well in winning over audiences wherever they play and whenever they are heard.
The Dunes were formed in Markham, Ontario, Canada in early 2003 by singer/ songwriter/front-man, Kevin Pullen. Initially Pullen driven by a desire to make meaningful melodic, engaging, raucous, intelligent, music which flowed naturally his everyday stream of consciousness, a desire that remains at the heart of the bands' philosophy. Pullen's influences are such bands as Radiohead, Travis, The Beatles, David Bowie, Led Zeppelin, The Flaming Lips, Neil Young and so on. "It's a long list", explains, Pullen.
Once their roster was rounded out, The Dunes made a low quality 5-song EP entitled "inception" and gave them out for free while playing anywhere and everywhere they could. At this point they were quickly becoming regulars at The Legendary Horseshoe Tavern, The Mod Club Theatre, and Lee's Palace. Each time they preformed, it was in front of larger and larger crowds. People began to recognize their talent and subsequently they were asked to play at such events as The Docks Rocks playing alongside such acts as The Waking Eye's, The Trews and Oliver Black and many others. The Dunes also played in several other edge 102 showcases. The are just about to hit the studio preparing their first full length release entitled "Socializing w/ life"
Thought provoking, up lifting, yet dark and emotionally jarring, Socializing w/ life is a dramatic collection of heart felt songs that take the listener on a journey through love, loss, fear and desire. From the tender melodies and swooning lyrics of "Sunflower Eyes" and "The Easiest", the inspirational "Hurry Up" to the edgy snarling guitars of "Calling all Cars", Socializing w/ Life tells emotional tales of love and hope.
"Our goal here is pretty simple and it is to write good songs as honestly as we can without writing the same song over and over......The Dunes will never be a band that could be pigeon holed.......because we write "songs" and we simply don't stick to one song style or structure.....that would be pretty boring wouldn't it?" outlined Pullen at the time of release.
The Dunes have been writing and performing constantly in and around Southern Ontario recently taking part in the edge 102 Muki Baum Charity event at The Mod Club Theatre. Moreover, they have garnered attention and praise from fans and critics alike. Dean Blundell, the edge 102's morning host said of band, "The only good indie band in Toronto is The Dunes". No wonder the band is as exited and as motivated as ever. "You know things were pretty fucked up there for a while. I didn't think that I would be able to continue under the name The Dunes. I thought about going it alone but I must say there is this magic between the four of us now, I cannot describe it. It's bigger than us now, it's a mood, it's cohesion, it's an audio truth explosion for your ears. One show will have you convinced", Pullen boldly proclaims.
