THE PIXIES MEETS THE CARPENTERS FOR KIDS?
Husband and wife kid-rockers Ellen and Matt have just released their debut album, Best Friends. A fusion of high-energy indie pop and harmony-driven ballads, Best Friends aims to take listeners on an emotional journey while they rock out.
Not your average kids music here. Ellen and Matt have varied influences, which they wanted to share with their young audience. This album has homages to the Beatles and the Carpenters, but also to the Pixies and the Ramones, Ellen says. Kids have the ability to enjoy, and should be exposed to, all of musics many moods.
Written and recorded in its entirety while Ellen was pregnant with twins, Best Friends is truly a family affair. Our older son, Noah, was our greatest inspiration, Matt recalls. Whether it was the typical preschooler struggles over eating dinner or going to bed, or just the joys of silly dancing, there was no shortage of ideas with Noah around. Ellen adds, The babies in my belly really fueled my creativity. Whole songs came to me in the middle of the night when I couldnt sleep. They flowed out of me in a magical way.
Ellen and Matts songs are not only designed to be fun to listen to. Theres a different feeling with each song, Matt says, which we were hoping to convey, and we think really comes across. There is an inherent honesty and a subtle lesson to be learned in each song, both musically and lyrically, whether it is silly or soulful.
