Emily Elbert is a 17-year old singer/songwriter who blends a hip musical perspective with an in-depth knowledge of classic favorites to create unique vocal and guitar arrangements. Her contemporary acoustic style uses a wide-ranging guitar technique that combines jazzy lines with strumming and fingerstyle playing. Emily says, "I love music from around the world and like to combine the sounds of jazz, folk, soul, country, blues, pop, and world music into a style that is all my own."
In spring, 2006, she was named one of three top winners of Texas Music Projects premier contest, "Texas 10 Under 20" in Dallas. This summer, Emily studied vocal jazz at the University of North Texas for the second year. She studied contemporary music at Berklee College of Music's Five-Week Summer Performance Program in Boston, where she was awarded the largest scholarship given to a vocalist in that program and was also chosen as a winner of Berklee's Performing Songwriter Contest. Dallas Songwriters Association recently selected Emily as a semifinalist in their annual contest in the singer/songwriter category, and Relix magazine selected her bluesy song, "I Feel Fine" as one of two runners up in their JamOff! contest. Music critic and host Gary Cogill recently invited Emily to perform on WFAA's show, Good Morning, Texas.
A third-generation professional musician, Emily began playing guitar three years ago. She sings classical music with her school's national award-winning choir, sings and dances in show choir, performs for her church, teaches guitar lessons, and plays at coffee houses, benefits, festivals, and shows. Emily is currently a high school senior and plans to major in music in college.
Before falling in love with guitar, Emily studied piano for seven years and performed in over fifty competitions and festivals. She is a black belt in taekwondo and was on her schools step-dance team and golf team. She is happiest when she gets together with friends to jam, sing, perform, listen to music, and go to concerts.
