OK...back to The Cashmere Bums...
This album was once on the German label Taxim. This is what the Germans had to say:
Rolling Stone Magazine
German Edition Feb 1998
By: Von Jorg Gulden
When the tinkers of Phish have up to now just been a mediocre alternative for all real hard Deadheads, now in the shape of Gary Gates with The Cashmere Bums, the real redemption approaches the real thing!
The sextet from Santa Cruz, California knows even with this debut album how to create these magic vibes that made Deadheads give up
their careers for a pilgrimage around half the world.
The bandleader Gary Gates, makes you believe in Garcia's resurrection and the remaining five are conjuring up exactly this hypnotic mixture
of total relaxation and deeply spontaneous intensity that made five hour Dead gigs recreational timewarps.
Divine westcoast sounds, without any expiry date. In short- timeless.

Even if the longplay debut of Gary Gates With the Cashmere Bums just came out in this country, it could have been produced in the 70's just as well.
What the formation from Santa Cruz introduces quite convincingly, does hardly sound different than the westcoast rock that was popular 20 years ago.
The Northern Californians make no bones about themselves being strongly influenced by the harmonic vocals of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young,
the relaxed group play of The Doobie Brothers as well as the acid rock excursions of the Grateful Dead.
Because of them assembling this retrospective in such an attractive way,
we must highly recommend their CD to any devotee of the 70's school.
