Description

No one ever called Vashon Island, a short ferry ride from Seattle, a hotbed of innovative jazzno one, that is, except Island Jazz Quintet. Meeting and growing in a place that is the antithesis of bright lights and glamour gave the band a chance to develop its style in peace. That style combines improvisational jazz, bossa nova, and a smoky hint of cabaret in distinctive clean arrangements that lead Victory Review to note, Vashon Island boasts a group worthy of national attention. Whether digging up an obscure Kurt Weill relic, debuting a new tune (about half their material is original), or delivering a new take on a favorite Bossa Nova, IJQ is making waves in the Pacific Northwest and elsewhere with a captivating live show and a sound that breathes new life into the art form. In addition to making regular appearances at festivals and club dates in the Seattle area, the band has performed internationally, including stints in Mexico and China.

In these guys you have a fine instrumental quartet...They can swing with the best and seem especially influenced by the California cool sound of Chet Baker. Their rendition of the classic number "Bernie's Tune" is a knockout. But that's not all. They have a dynamite vocalist as well. Maggie Laird is a real find. IJQ has recorded two critically acclaimed CD's, garnering airplay on radio stations all over the country. Of the second disc's title track, Jerome Wilson of Cadence Magazine writes, "Youkali" is a French-Arabian tango sung and played with sensual zest, with Laird showing a good command of French and Person really smearing his trumpet...


The band has just completed its third album, Who knows, available now at CDBaby.com. They continue to evolve their own style, mixing improvisational jazz with clever composition and clean arrangements. The music is original and seductive, fraught with color, tension, and drive.
