Exploding onto the scene with his jaw dropping Bass Improvisations, Jamal Hurse has been compared to sounding like Jaco on Acid! and is fast becoming known as a musicians musician that EVERYONE can enjoy.
Born with a profound hearing loss, Jamal is a Solo Instrumentalist, who has developed his own innovative style weaving multiple layers of melody and sounds at the same time,
whatt you hear is how he played it! Insisting that the music be human, full of passion and emotion, Jamal at times has little regard to meter or tempo. It is truly a fantastic ride that he takes us on, riding the waves of sound that he produces through his Fretless 4-string Bass. There is no denying that this music comes from another realm, and that not everyone who hears it is prepared for its impact.
Influenced by Artists such as Beethoven, Ornette Coleman, Jimi Hendrix, Charlie Parker, Mike Watt, Angelo Moore, Louis Armstrong, Al DiMeola, Ronnie Montrose, and Ignacy Jan Paderewski, combined with a traditional musical background, Jamal is meditative, melodious, and serene in one moment, then suddenly spins a full 180 into a sound that kicks you in the gut and leaves you scrambling to find your jaw somewhere in the rubble that was once your mind.
Jamal, at 41, is now emerging from his self-induced sabbatical from the public with his totally unique and innovative style that has evoked strong emotions in many a listener. With a no rules...just express yourself! attitude towards just about everything in life, Jamal shares this love of life, passions, and his own artistic expression through his music, and has taken the role the of Fretless Electric Bass and turned it upside down.
In Jamal's own words..."I don't play the role...I play the Instrument. Self-Expression is Pure Unfettered Freedom".

Jamal Hurse Follow Your Bliss
By Brent-Anthony Johnson
Kinetic solo bass? Definitely from somewhere else bass! Now that we understand no music can be described verbally Jamals music feels like Brand X meets Heavy Metal meets Omar Faruk Tekbilek. This is improvisational music on the edge, to be certain but without the constant missing of other instrumentation! The implied percussion and vocalization are very present in each of the discs 8 solo pieces. Lovers of Percy Jones, Jamaaladeen Tacuma, and/or the earlier works of Dann Glenn will really dig Jamals approach to the electric bass guitar as well as his singular journey to a musical world shown to far too few.
Jamal Hurse was born in 1965 with bilateral congenital hearing loss, which caused him to hear casual conversation and intermittent sounds as rhythmic cadences. His 41 years on planet earth has forged his art resulting in one of the purest and utterly heartfelt expressions Ive ever heard! Imagine a conversation with a dearest loved one across a thousand mile chasm. Or, imagine a rain dance in deep space. The tune Deceptive River is my personal favorite! Jamals sound is at once most engaging, while at the same time it is one of the loneliest sounds on earth! This cat is telling a beautiful story! For a profound lesson on the subject of musical insights Follow Your Bliss is a must own disc! Check out Jamal Hurse at www.jamalbass.net, and hear him at Myspace.com!
