Michael Nastos, The Ann Arbor News
David Janeway was born in Rochester, New York on June 4, 1955. He began studying classical piano at the age of six after moving to Detroit in 1960. Early influences included Harold McKinney, Marcus Belgrave, Bill Evans, and Denny Zeitlin. After moving to New York City in 1978, Janeway studied with the late Albert Dailey for two years. During this time he worked and recorded with many latin and jazz groups.
Janeway's compositions and improvisations reveal an intensely dedicated and sensitive individual. While his driving power and intricate rhythms have earned him comparisons to McCoy Tyner, make no mistake, he is an artist with an undeniably unique voice. Drawing upon his Latin music experience, he often spices his music with unexpected salsa turns and twists that make for passionate solos.
Janeway has also worked with Art Farmer, The Supremes, Michal Urbaniak,Spanky Wilson, David "Fathead" Newman, Jr. Cook, Sonny Fortune, Billy Hart, Tom Harrell, Danny Gottlieb,Louis Smith, Dakota Staton, Valery Ponomarev, and others.
He has performed at Zanzibar, Visiones, Birdland, Sonny's, Village Gate, Madison Square Garden as well as the Detroit Montreus Jazz Festival in 1983-84, and other clubs throughout the U.S. and Europe.
His first recording as a leader was entitled "Entry Point" on New Directions, 1986/LP. It features the late Bob Berg, Marcus Belgrave and Steve Berrios. His second CD as a leader, "Inside Out", on Timeless Records featured Sonny Fortune and Billy Hart. This third CD as a leader, "Excursion" features Janeway in a trio setting with Harvie S and Steve Davis.
