Description
the songs on this record have been floating around for several years and it was back in 2003 that i began randomly showing them to my friends in the dirty rugs. for the most part what we were doing in that group was improvised music. we enjoyed making it up as we went, which helped build a strong comradery between us. this allowed ideas to flow easily and without much deliberation. whenever i showed them a song it just seemed to shape itself.
in the past i would usually make a four track demo of a song on a cassette tape. i would perform all the parts myself because it was the easiest way to finish a song. however, i started to become dissatisfied with the results and i realized that i have always wanted to produce an album in a more hi-fi manner. because the songs were coming together so well with the dirty rugs it seemed like the perfect time to make a more embellished recording.
disillusioned with the sterile surroundings of most recording studios (not to mention the cost) i set out to record and produce the album myself. i pieced together a home studio and we began recording the songs live in a basement practice space. we finished the basic tracks in one month and some of the takes are literally the first or second time ever playing the songs together. i ended up moving right after that so i set up the recording gear in my new apartment which happened to have nice hardwood floors. overdubs were added in the living room and i was lucky enough to convince a few very talented chicago musicians to make some "guest appearances." i took my time mixing the songs because honestly i don't know the first thing about mixing! finally my friend peter at aca mastering helped me polish up the tracks.
hope you enjoy the music.
