Songs For Aging Cynics
Karma Farmers
"Dave Shiflett punctures the pompous, unmasks charlatans and laughs at human folly. Plus, he writes a mean love song. If Twain and Mencken were alive today, they'd have ``Songs for Aging Cynics" on their iPods." Rick Warner, Bloomberg News

Description
Welcome to Songs for Aging Cynics. The Karma Farmers are based in Richmond, Virginia. All music and lyrics are by Dave Shiflett (who sings and plays guitar), who so far as we know is the only folk singer who has co-authored a book with Donald Trump. Other band members are Jeanine Guidry (vocals), Tripp Johnson (mandolin), Matt Boon (bass) and Jim Skelding (violin).
This is a unique mix of folk/Americana/acoustic jazz featuring beautiful female vocals (Jeanine reminds many people of Sarah McLachlan), often in duet with a male singer (Dave) whose growl brings to mind Tom Waits.
Check track 1 -- Poor Girl (Peach) -- a love tribute, though of an unconventional sort: "She don't hear no voices/She don't read no Ivanhoe" is a sample line. Then check track two -- Perfect Sky -- a beautiful love ballad you could play at most weddings. Ditto for Straight For You (track 5).
It's not all sweetness and light, however.
If you don't like Madonna (the singer, not the Mother of Jesus), check out track 8 (Old Man Moan). There are also songs about going to heaven, going to sea, going nowhere, falling through thin air, growing old, leaving town and one of the most beautiful songs you'll ever hear about despair (Take My Dreams Away).
The Karma Farmers also have, on-staff, a chaplain and a designated driver.
Thanks for listening, and if you want to post a review we'll make sure you win the lottery. We'd also like to hear what you think of the disc, and are always looking for gigs. Get in touch at DShifl@aol.com
