Description
Laura Jean Binkley grew up in Brookings, South Dakota, home to the jackrabbit and surrounded by lots and lots of corn. Fortunately, Lauras mother taught her how to play the guitar at a young age and by the time she reached the bumpy road of adolescence, Laura had already written her first song, Rain.
After moving to Minneapolis to study at the University of Minnesota, Laura began performing with the Acoustic Showcase, a group of starving young musicians who played weekly around the city in coffee houses and bars. In 2003, Laura moved to Columbia, Missouri where she recorded her debut album, State of Mind.
Since moving to Columbia, Laura has built a steady and loyal following. Fans of Lauras music enjoy not only her pleasant sound, but also her discerning lyrics. Laura is often asked how, at such a young age, she is able to write such insightful songs covering the vast experiences of life. Lauras fans are also delighted by the variety that her music encompasses within the folk genre. It is perhaps because of both Lauras perceptive lyrics and the variety of topics she tackles in her songwriting that Lauras fan base ranges from young to old. After an enjoyable show, younger fans can often be heard comparing Laura to Ani DiFranco or Jewel, whereas the older crowd usually hears vestiges of Joni Mitchell in Lauras work. Labeled by her fans as the best folk artist in the Midwest, people from all walks of life will find Lauras music relatable and enjoyable.
