Description
Born John McMorris in 1965 Kingston , Jamaica , Little John became a recording artist while still in his childhood. He had the seemingly inexhaustible knack of placing new lyrics over vintage riddims, delivering them in an enthusiastic roughhouse manner. At the tender age of nine he first recorded with Captain Sinbad for the Youth In Progress label. His first sides for producer Don Mais - whose production style was perhaps the strongest bridge between roots reggae and dancehall - proved highly popular. By the time he had reached his teens in the early eighties, Little John had recorded for almost all the Jamaican top producers like King Tubby, King Jammy, Jah Thomas and Ossie Thomas and had become one of reggae's most prolific artists with several hundred singles released. Throughout the 80s he was seldom out of the reggae charts. Considered by many to be the first dancehall singer, his ability to fit lyrics over any rhythm or backing track became something of a legend. He had become a superstar by the age of 17 He honed his art and perfected his craft working with all the top Sound systems and producers in Jamaica w ith a lengthy string of live performances. He simultaneously made a bewildering number of recordings for an equally bewildering number of labels.
In 1999 Little John decided to take a hiatus. He built a studio in his home and began working with the youths in his community. He began recording all the myriad of tunes in his head producing a large body of incredible work. Now in 2005 after the prodding by many fans Little John has decided to return to the performance arena. A man of the people, Little John is loved and respected everywhere he goes. His talent, warm personality and skill as a raconteur have remained, and make him one of the true living legends of reggae. The first album of the large body of new work he has done is ready for release. The album is called, Buld Back Yard, and he hasnt lost a step. His skill has grown like him and his big heart.
