The entire CD was recorded live at SoundMoves Recording Studios in Sun Valley, CA, on July 15, 2006, in front of some of Marina's most devoted fans. The advance tickets were sold out almost instantly, and fifty fans lounged on pillows in the live room of the recording studio as Marina performed 12 fan favorites - some performed solo and some accompanied by her band. For most fans, it was their first time in a recording studio, allowing them to get up close and be a part of the magic.
By attending the event, fans also helped sponsor the Live Recording. Among other sponsors were Audix Microphones and Digital Cafe Tour. A DVD of the live session is in the works.
THE SONGS
The album opens with the upbeat "I'll Be Alright" and "In My Head", followed by the exquisite partially-acoustic version of "Killing My Dream". Marina's charmingly witty introduction of "Pesnya O Tebe", the only track in Russian, gets the audience giggling, and then Marina tells the story behind "Unbalanced", an upbeat and bouncy new song about trying to figure out your place in this world. Cole Coleman's guitars range from dreamy and ethereal to crunchy and driving on this one.
For "Ocean", the moody and soothing song originally recorded for the singer's 2003 release "Something Of My Own", the band leaves Marina at her piano, with Nick Baker, her long-time co-writer, accompanying her on the acoustic guitar. Then Nick too leaves the stage, and Marina performs "Father", an achingly-beautiful ballad about the father-daughter bond that could have been.
On "That's The Way It Goes", the fun little ditty about a day in one busy L.A. life, Marina surprises fans with a little tribute to her favorite "Western" songwriter (you will have to hear the story for this one). For "When I Come Home", Marina & Nick perform together, and Marina gets to showcase her crystal-clear yet very strong voice.
The band returns to perform "Underneath Your Sky", a love song with a huge crescendo in the bridge and an especially powerful final chorus, where Marina sings "Underneath Your Sky" a cappella, and the band comes in, with Shannon Hurley's keyboards channeling an entire orchestra.
Marina tells the story behind "Something of My Own", and the band performs the electrifying song with Ben Eisen's bouncy bass groovin' throughout. Near the end, the band stops and Marina tenderly sings in Russian, accompanied by just a few piano notes, sending goose bumps through the audience.
With the audience not yet ready to let her go, Marina announces that she has one more song for them, and applause erupts. This encore is a breathtaking cover of The Beatles' "Here There, and Everywhere," a delicate and stunning tribute to Marina's biggest influence.
