Description
The rags on this album are a motley collection - some are fairly well-known classics of the genre, like Scott Joplin's "Weeping Willow", Joseph Lamb's "Top Liner Rag", or James Scott's "Frog Legs". Two are a little more obscure - Eubie Blake's "Chevy Chase" and Scott Joplin's "Heliotrope Bouquet". One is virtually unknown - Charlotte Blake's "Gravel Rag" (a delightful piece that really ought to be played more). And then, the remaining four are original compositions by Larisa Migachyov - compositions that so duplicate the style and "feel" of the ragtime era that it is hard to believe that they were written in 2006 rather than 1906.
Larisa Migachyov came to ragtime relatively recently; her early musical training was in classical piano, and until about two years ago, she confined herself to the classical repertoire (especially Chopin). After moving to San Antonio, TX, she discovered the San Antonio Ragtime Society and began to attend their meetings; as her interest in ragtime grew, she learned more and more rags, and eventually began composing her own. She brings a classical touch and a bit of reserve to the rags she plays, though the essential joy of the genre comes through in her playing.
