Description
Heads turn and voices stop when Rebekah Rhys dives into her music, opening her powerful voice to listeners. Her music travels over several styles, channeling Alanis Morisette and Norah Jones in a reluctant combination of power and grace, projecting her musical integrity.
Described by fans and friends alike as edgy, sexy and witty; twenty-three year old Rebekah, originally from Kalamazoo, Michigan, writes music that evokes passion, power and laughter from both genders. Her eclectic musical nature unites styles and instruments representing the many facets and experiences_ which have impacted her life. Rebekah commands attention as she switches from piano to guitar; changes styles from jazz to pop_ and back, all the while intertwining poetic lyrical content conveying both a tongue in cheek social commentary and complex structures of thoughtful insight. Her ability to communicate powerful themes of life, love and experience with an emotionally charged voice give her audience pause.
I was raised with music, Rebekah jokes. Both Rebekahs parents are music teachers who not only taught Rebekah and her two younger brothers how to play music, but also taught their children how to live a life that stands for something.
With the release of her first EP, Neither Here nor There, Rebekah recognizes her free spirit is never content staying in one place. Each song has some measure of movement. The characters in her songs are telling the story of travel, either through their honesty about relationships or through their self-reflection. Each song finds itself with a struggle to made a difference or to stay put. Rebekah seems to find herself somewhere in the middle, never really one thing or anothernot easily defined or categorized. Her journey brings her to the discovery that, while sometimes harder, making your
own path, rather than following the road signs, is a much sweeter experience.
