Los Angeles-based artist Lane was born in Geneva, Switzerland to English and American parents. Ive always had this wanderlust, this desire to get out into the world and experience it fully. My parents have traveled and lived all over, so I think Ive always been aware that theres more world out there than my hometown. Her hometown of Winston-Salem, North Carolina is where she grew up and voraciously devoured rock n roll, blues, pop, country and old jazz. For as long as I can remember, I have been deeply moved by music. Its incredibly powerful how a song can change ones perception of an event or a situation, or bring up deep-seated emotions, taking you back to a moment in time. Some of Lanes biggest influences are artists Sheryl Crow, the Dixie Chicks, Sarah McLachlan, and Ani DiFranco. Lane cultivated her voice while singing the lead in musicals and in various rock, jazz, funk, and folk bands. The end result is a debut album which beautifully amalgamates soulful acoustic rock and bohemian soundscapes with just a tinge of Americana. Lane has been compared to present day musical powerhouses Sheryl Crow and Fiona Apple.
This intelligent and sincere ten-song album is laid out like an open diary, excavating the beginning, middle, and end of a relationship. The CD grabs your attention from the start with "Mother Mary", which describes a longing for a spiritual awakening. In Most Gorgeous Thing she seduces her lover with late night glances across a greasy diner table. Everyone Bleeds gives comfort to a friend who cant forgive herself for her mistakes. Boone chillingly chronicles a date rape and its aftermath. John Doe divulges the torment and regret of letting go of a long-lost love. Walk tells the story of a woman at the end of her rope. Lane ties up her album with Believer, a journey of hope and renewal. Contrary to the theme of anguish and abandonment, Lanes heart-wrenching album is powerfully uplifting.
