Description
Belinda Scroggins writes songs that are intimate and introspective. She opens her heart and lets the listener in. "It's a vulnerable thing for me to allow people to hear what I think. My music goes in many directions but for the most part I consider myself a lyricist."
Her debut CD "Mystical Madness" released in March 2001 is a blend of rock, blues and haunting ballads that get into your head and stay there.
"Mystical Madness" is a paradox of styles. It takes the listener to many places. Belinda wrote each of the tracks on the CD. That is why she has such an intensity in her performances. She sings from the gut and the heart. When she sings ballads her voice is almost heartwrenching but when she rocks she has an edge that is reminiscent of Janis Joplin. Rarely is there a performer that can bridge this gap and do it well.
How did an accountant with no formal musical training learn to sing with such a vengence? Although she swears that her first singing experiences were to a reluctantly captive audience of her brothers and sisters it was not until much later in life that an "inner voice" told her to get a guitar and begin singing " It's always been a kind of nagging thing in the back of my head that says music is what you love."
"In the early 80's I sang in several cover bands but found myself disillusioned by the continual cycle of band breakups. I enrolled in college and dropped out of the music scene for 12 years. In 1994, I was working a job that required me to travel. After endless hours of sitting alone in hotel rooms I started writing again. I soon realized that a piece of me had been missing and that creating music was my true passion. I knew that I liked what I was writing but I needed to know if anyone else did. I put together enough material for a solo acoustic act and after about a year started performing around Cincinnati clubs and bookstores. I received a lot of positive response while performing and decided to record a CD. The musicians that played on the CD and the staff at Jewel Recording were phenomenal. I am very excited about the results."
Belinda has recently opened for Blessid Union of Souls and is receiving airplay on WAIF 88.3 FM in Cincinnati, Ohio.
