Sidekick Mafia - Self-released
Kicking off their long-awaited disc with rockabilly kicker Graveyard Love is the first of many good moments here. It sets the tone with, quite possibly, the coolest verse of all time: Hey little baby Im six feet down / Get you a shovel and dig around / Necrophiliate me while Im fresh. One of Dallas most versatile bands, SM includes the sweet ballad Natalie, punk-thrasher Memories In Dreams, melancholy ode Just Me and the swingy rocker Burnin Time. Leader Justin Pickards vocals are stellar, and his guitar is crisp, fronting a great sounding mix with Brondon Escos drums and Matt Brannons bass and harmonies. With catchy, inspired music decorated by some brilliant lyrics, this is one of the best CDs of the year, locally or otherwise.
Dallas rock and rollers Sidekick Mafia are a contradiction. We play rock and roll. Not rock - but rock and roll, guitarist Justin Pickard implores. Anyone who has caught a live show already knows that. Though they have some punk influences, their sound has evolved into some of the heaviest, fastest and tightest garage rock around. Not interested? Theyll throw down some rockabilly, or put a country or swing tilt on a roots rocker. Under the lights, Pickard proves to be one of the best vocalists in town, helped by Brannons perfect harmonizing. They dont just yell, they sing, wonderfully - in key all the time. Thats one big hurdle - the next is songwriting. Catchy tunes are nice, but to add in crazy running base lines on top of Escos stunningly eclectic drum jams creates a feast for the senses. A 1000-watt psychedelic spotlight.
