Description
SPANK was born in March of 2003, but its history goes back a bit farther. It was in January, 2001 that brothers Ben and David Barker, Jody Blevins and Brian Boles joined forces to begin a new musical exploration. Playing under a previous name, they began making changes. Gone were the days of hair metal, progressive rock and grunge. All four members were focused on pursuing a new, straight-ahead, stripped down sound. A dedication to delivering the purest version of what is commonly referred to as "rock" became the driving force for the band.
SPANK performances are high energy, fun, entertaining showcases for the music. It's the kind of show the band members watched their heroes put on. They feel strongly about continuing that tradition of a sweaty, in-your-face rock and roll celebration. Watching them in action one might wonder: 'who will pass out first?', 'whose head will hit the ceiling?', 'who will trip and fall off the stage?'. And when none of that (usually) happens, one realizes that he or she is hearing a great song and being totally entertained. The band's excitement becomes one's own.
SPANK songwriting is a long but rewarding process. No matter who brings in material, all group members contribute to molding a piece into its best form. Each one creates his own part, drawing on himself and input from the others. Whether an alteration is as small as adding one note or as large as tearing apart and rebuilding both music and lyrics, the end result is a better song every time.
SPANK continues to evolve into the best possible version of itself. With a concentrated effort, the look, the sound, the show and the music will continue to reach greater heights. Fortunately, the band members are their own worst critics. By the time a new song is played to an audience or a new T-shirt is worn in a photo, it has been thoroughly checked and balanced for SPANK quality. That's high quality. That's rock quality.
