Description
Stick shift started as a high school project like most bands.
It was 1996 and I (Walter Shrum) guitarist and singer, was so inspired by bands like screeching weasel and face to face that i just had to get on stage after seeing them in the past.
I remember sitting in gym class one day listening to my walkman and saw this kid(Larry Hollbrook) drumming with his hands, I asked him if he was a drummer. He said yes.
So let him listen to my mix tape i made myself. He wasn't used to that kind of music but was very interested. He grew up on AC/DC, Skynard type of stuff.
A few weeks later we set up our first practice. I had a couple of songs written that i wanted to try out.
We met up at his parents house in an old shed with only room to stand.
We practiced while the washing machine and dryer were running, that didnt bother us we were just so excited about starting a band.
Little did we know how long of a journey we were setting ourselves up for. We practiced for a few months and found ourselves our first bass player. A girl
named Lisa trinadad. She was a very short lived bass player lasted for only three shows but is a friend for life. Shortly after that we got damon debbits.
That boy could play some bass. Damon was in the band for its beggining years. He stayed with the band till we decided we needed to take
it further than local shows.
Well just about the time we decided it was time to hit the road, Larry was stuck with graduating high school. He was getting kicked out of his house and
was forced to join the navy. Now i thought the band was done for. Luckily Lisa was sleeping on my living room floor for a while because she too was
also kicked out of her house. She was working at waldenbooks. While working there she met a guy(Thom Yusko) who just moved here from Maryland.
Great news Thom was a punk rock drummer looking for a band. It couldnt have been timed better. The best part was thom had a lot of friends in the northern
region so we hit the road up there several times. With thom in the band we recorded our first Cd(Its naked time). we were finally getting big shows, with bands like
The Ataris, The nobodys, swindle, ann beretta, etc.
After playing shows for that cd we recorded a second record and e.p. this time(not a metal band). A slightly different record but we were still very happy
with it. after that record we started to build a great following on the east coast of the U.S. Going on tour numerous times a year.
Since then the band has broken up due to everyone going seperate ways. But no hard feelings.
