Liner Notes
How refreshing! In the growing sea of music created primarily for the purpose of being easy to sell to the masses, it is most exciting to hear music filled with individual expression and authenticity. On One for the Angels, Grants growth and maturity musically, personally, philosophically, and spiritually is evident. I believe that this is due to the commitment he made early on in his life to do the hard work required to perfect his technique, while also remaining true to the vision and inspiration that separates well performed music from that which is also inspiring and evocative.
Vision shines brightly on Grants most recent creation. His already naturally gifted bass skills have not only grown to a level seldom reached by any musician in any music genre, but they have now generalized to other instruments and his composition skills as well. Complex, yet subtle, guitar lines weave in and out of fluid bass tones and keyboard accents - always walking the edge, but never falling off, never different just for the sake of being different, pushing the envelope to just the right point.
This is what makes my mind, spirit, and soul jump when I hear Grants new offering to us. Its real, its current, and reflects a synthesis of many musical influences that will bring you closer to the soul of the creator. In this way, he communicates a vision to you as much as he entertains you. Just like in his own life, his music moves toward the ideal while also remaining responsive to, and reflective of, the current environment. This is, at heart, spiritual, and the music is a manifestation of this deeper purpose.
Maybe that is why Grant called his most recent creation, One for the Angels. This is more a dedication than it is a title, and seems to reflect both Grants personal experience, as well as his wish for us - the experience of being lifted to greater perfection and closeness to God on the backs of the wings of angels finding God through our growth toward His light. In this way, the joy I find in listening reminds me of the line from an Emily Dickenson poem that states: Instead of getting to Heaven at last, Im going all along!
