THE MANDO BOYS LIVE HOLSTEIN LUST, THE MIDWESTERN TOURS 19871995
A new CD project from Peter Ostroushko, Dick Nunneley, Joe Trimbach
and John Niemann combines brilliant artistry and heap of fun
(Minneapolis, Minn.) Their fans remember them well. The Mando Boys, four outrageously attired guys who played music so stunning the audience didnt know whether to laugh themselves sick or leap to their collective feet in spontaneous standing ovation.
Now theyre back at least in a recorded version. Peter Ostroushko has collected live tour recordings of the quartet spanning eight years and culled them into a dazzling new album: The Mando Boys Live Holstein Lust, the Midwestern Tours 19871995.
Hang on to your hat! This CD takes you on a wild ride. Posing as Maxim, Habib, Maurice and Sonny, Ostroushko (mandolin, mandola, fiddle), Dick Nunneley (mandolin, mandola, guitar), Joe Trimbach (mandola, mandolin, fiddle) and John Niemann (mandocello, fiddle) romp through everything from Bachs Double Violin Concerto in D Minor to a medley of Bill Monroe bluegrass classics. There are Benny Goodman numbers, Scott Joplin rags, traditional tunes from Russia and Puerto Rico, an original composition by Nunneley, some Gershwin, a nod to Ritchie Valens, and a little Mozart why not? Its an unlikely combo of music tied together with the Mando Boys oddball hijinks.
Ostroushko, who won an Emmy for the score of Minnesota: A History of the Land (Twin Cities Public Television), is one of the most accomplished instrumentalists and gifted composers of his generation. These rare, live recordings with Trimbach, Nunneley and Niemann showcase the Mando Boys astonishing instrumental dexterity, some masterful arrangements for mandolin, mandola and mandocello, and the whacky, offbeat humor that kept fans coming back for more.
The album hits stores December 5. Good music and a good laugh what better?
