WHO
Shevy Smith
WHEN
I arrived on the 16th day of February in 1983.
WHERE
I grew up on a small farm in central Kansas. It was the type of place where boys still drive souped-up muscle cars, and Saturday nights consist of parties around a bonfire.
WHAT
At the age of four, I began playing the piano and picked up guitar when I was thirteen. I write on both instruments -- and on airplanes, road trips, and Taco Bell napkins
WHY
The need to connect with others is definitely the motivation behind why I play. Call me idealistic, but I truly believe that music is the catalyst for happiness and understanding in most of our lives. It helps us sort through our thoughts. If I can offer that sense of clarity to a listener through a song, then I feel somewhat worthwhile and useful.
HOW
Most of my songs are very much based upon first hand experience. I find it sort of difficult to write an impersonal song that evokes any kind of emotion. I am completely enamored by imagery, so I tend to spend a lot of time trying to paint an accurate landscape, or picture, for the listener. The story line in a song is much like a little movie to me. If I am writing about a boy in a beat-up four-wheel drive, I could also tell you what color his eyes are, if he burns or tans in the sun , and that he won the jump-roping competition in the third grade. Fleshing out characters that are only just a shade away from being real is the basis for an interesting story and helps lead a song in to honest territory.
