Description
American Nobody is the voice of a new generation of artists, a generation of empowered independent touring musicians and songwriters. Technology and the desire of music fans around the world to explore non-mainstream music has created a demand for this pool of empowered indie musicians. And in the realm of self-produced albums, you simply will not encounter anything that stands above the new American Nobody release.
Mostly recorded in an apartment bedroom in the small town of Jackson, Wyoming, the American Nobody release comes across as a much higher budget production. American Nobody, aka Brian Granse, wrote every song on this album, an album in which failed love is a common thread, and played nearly every instrument in the studio. And in a fantastic moment of great irony, his long-standing relationship of six years fell to pieces in the final weeks of the project, forcing the studio and everything else he owned to leave the premises immediately, inspiring the authorship of New Roads Ahead, The End, and Beautiful Disasters.
The American Nobody self-titled album then moved to spare rooms of both family and friends in the Midwest, where he set up the homeless studio and continued to chip away at the album. It is here in both Wisconsin and Illinois, where the self-titled release saw its final stages. In Madison, Wisconsin, American Nobody imported three songs into the system at Butch Vigs Smart Studios. It is here that Nirvana recorded its early sketches of Nevermind and other music, a wonderful moment for A.N., whose earliest influence on the guitar was none-other than Kurt Cobain himself. This one and a half hour session marked the only recording session during which a professional studio was accessed. Piano tracks for Avenues, The End, and South to Memphis are the result.
The American Nobody album was mixed by engineer Frank Stearns at his MARS studio outside of Portland, Oregon. Frank and A.N.(Brian) met at a coffeehouse in Portland during one of A.N.s performances in 2004. The two became friends and remained in contact over time, and when the self-titled project hit the table, A.N. hired Frank to handle the mixing. Franks meticulous attention to detail and precise musical awareness deserve much credit on the project, helping to further polish this self-produced masterpiece.
This release will be enjoyed by listeners of all models and makes. With tracks of outright Indie Rock, straight-up Folk, and Alt Country dabblings, this album shatters the boundaries of albums dedicated to one genre!
