Description
I grew up in Eugene, Oregon, which, believe it or not, is a hotbed of musical internationalism. My roots are not just the (wonderful and cheesy) pop music that filled the airways of the 80s and 90s: my parents met dancing to eastern European folk music in 11/8 time signature; my friends played Zimbabwean mbira growing up; my high school prom had a salsa band. When I started playing music as a kid, I deliberately picked the string bass because it is played in almost every kind of music. Since then, Ive recorded two CDs with the Eugene funk band Soul Funktion, one CD with the jazz combo The Jazz Aesthetic, and two CDs with the New Haven-based salsa band Sonido. My roots are in all of these kinds of music.
But this is not a salsa or jazz or soukous or klezmer album. It is jazzy pop rock, groovy tunes with a melodic sensibility that anyone can enjoy, without forgetting the weird meters and lush chords that got me excited about music in the first place. It is largely not my fault that the music sounds as good as it does: I twisted the arms of enough talented instrumentalists (Harlan Brothers, Jerrod Cattey, Adam Cushner, Peter Meredith, and Eric Meridiano) and recording engineers (led by Vic Steffens at Horizon Music Group) into putting their hearts into it. I think youll like it.
