Description
Under the leadership of musical director Jack Schantz, the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra has evolved from a regional repertory band to an ensemble that lives on the leading edge of the evolution of large ensemble jazz. The Surprise of Being captures the ensemble with special guest artist Joe Lovano in performance at the famous Birdland jazz club in New York City. Joe Lovano, one of the most influential saxophonists of his generation, is a Blue Note recording artist and a Grammy award winner. The bulk of the recording consists of a stunning five-part suite written for Lovano by CJO bassist/composer Dave Morgan. Other musicians featured on the recording include vocalist Judi Silvano, saxophonist Mike Lee, pianist Russ Schmidt, vibist Ron Busch, drummer Nate Douds, and trumpeters Jack Schantz and Jim Powell.
