Tired of the noise? Tired of the dribble? Tired of lyrics filled with swearing, sex, and violence? Then your prayers have been answered. If theres any indication that music from Heaven reaches Earth, its on the debut CD from singer/songwriter Lauri-Beth entitled On Angels Strings.
Lauri-Beth, lead singer of the Boston-based Dance/Rock band Possession, departs from the cover tunes and takes a solo turn with the release of On Angels Strings, which she dubs as a journey of love, heartbreak, and hope that transcends time.
The disc allows the listener to take a peek somewhat into this petite singers diary if you will, as the collection of songs spans twenty or so years of her life. Proof positive that great voices come from small packages, Lauri-Beths ethereal voice magically captures and keeps your attention throughout the CD. Lauri-Beth provides all lead and background vocals and plays acoustic guitar and strings throughout, masterfully creating her own signature sound. Producer Joe Clapp (Ultrasound Productions, Stoughton, MA), lends a hand on bass guitar duties.
On Angels Strings is a compilation of 11 original songs with words and music written and composed by Lauri-Beth, and a cover of the Frank Sinatra classic Under My Skin; an arrangement on acoustic guitar which Im sure would have made The Chairman of the Board say a beautiful tune from a classy dame.
The CD also contains several beautiful ballads, including Let Me Be Your Light and The Look, the latter of the two sure to become the next wedding song of choice among lovers old and new. Let Me Be Your Light is a tale of a sailor and a singer finding love on an autumn night and the song stirs the heart as the story unfolds. Reminiscent of those great tales spun by 1970s soft rock balladeers and makes one think back to singer/songwriter/storytellers like Gordon Lightfoot, Harry Chapin, and Carole King.
Lauri-Beth speeds things up a bit with the catchy little ditty Held by an Angel, which describes a nightlong dream encounter with said celestial being. Youll definitely be singing along and humming this tune for days. Another sure toe-tapper is Start Again, a song that will fill you up with positive emotion and inspire you to start again in the face of adversity and the great unknown.
The Pink Floyd-ish On the Inside captures the singers angst as she ponders about the delicate balance between ones life and ones destiny. Note the nod to Kansas at the end of this emotionally moving song.
An endearing tribute to the late Beatle, John Lennon, appropriately called Lennons Song, takes the listener back to a time not quite so long ago when his words of peace were suddenly silenced and how we all need to get back to what he tried to teach us through his thoughts, words, and music.
Rounding out the rest of On Angels Strings are several musical memoirs of love gained, love lost, and hope for love again in the songs, Catch Your Breath, Magic in the Air, How Could I, One More Time, and Love of My Life. While these are sure to be favorites among women listeners, Im sure men can relate to them too.
