Description
Tony Genge worked as jazz performer and touring R&B sideman for years before chasing his enthusiasms for other traditions along the academic route. Now he is an established formal composer with a heavy classical C.V. as well as the deeply swinging piano player who rolled up to RoadHouse with his roots showing.
Four of his own tunes are mixed in with three standards from the Great American Song-Book, plus one each from Kenny Drew, Clifford Brown, Bobby Timmons and Red Garland.
Author of a volume on Red Garland and another on Wynton Kelly, his playing echoes that lineage with his own a highly individual style in a classic piano-trio setting with Kieran Overs and Terry O'Mahoney.
Writer, composer, and swinging jazz pianist, Tony also leads a double life in the guise of educator Dr. Anthony Genge, Associate Professor in the Department of Music at St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia.
