Description
Ariah Firefly started singing at 8 years old when exposed to musical theater from her father in Brooklyn NY. Her father took her to many plays which inspired her to songwrite at this young age. She would carry a little pocket recorder around writing songs wherever she went. Her first song ever written was a song called Running Away! At 10, she began taking pop keyboards and classical piano, while also participating in many child/teen musicals off broadway. At 15 she joined a local rock band as the singer and started writing songs again.
Soon to follow, Ariah received her degree in jazz vocals at SUNY Purchase College in NY. She studied jazz piano, and in addition began doing studio work for jingles and demo singing for private projects and labels such as Sony Music as a vocalist. She has diligently studied to become the vocalist she is today by working with Marie A. formely of Zap Mamma and many other voice coaches such as Ray Smolover of Julliard, however she was born with the gift of a powerful instrument.
Most recently Ariah has trained with Raz Kennedy (one of the founders and members of Voicestra which was co-founded by Bobby Mcferrin). Through Ariah's studies with Marie and Raz, Ariah realized how affected the human voice is by emotion and how powerful the human voice is to invoke emotion. This realization has sent Ariah on the journey of expressing deep emotion to inspire others to do the same through her soulful songwriting and singing in a very raw way. Before moving to the west coast, she played the NYC club circuit at places like The Baggot Inn, Elbow Room, Baby Jupiter, Spiral, and several clubs in the east village. Ariah now lives in the bay area of California where she is currently performing with several acts.
Her own band, the Ariah Firefly Band is a soulful entarouge of some of the best musicians in the the bay: Geoff Brennan (Bonnie Raitt), Tony Mattioli (Stolen Bibles), Dan Eisenberg (Ryan Adams, Shelby Lynn, Tift Merritt), Brian Clahan (Wake) and Alan Lin (Noe Venable, Vienna Teng). Ariah has shared the stage as an opening act with artists Phoebe Snow, Jesse Collin Young, Wynton Marsalis Orchestra to name a few.
As a vocalist, Ariah is extremely expressive with a sound that reminds many of Joni Mitchell, Fiona Apple and Christina Aguiler. When Ariah plays piano she has been told her style of playing reminds them of Vanessa Carlton, but really....it's just ARIAH doing what she does. When asked why her name is Ariah Firefly by fans, she responds,"I prefer to fly through life with a light on in everything I do and experience...."
Ariahs first album Brooklyn Dreams songwriting is as deep as Joni Mitchells and as soulful as arists like Christina Aguilera. This combo creates a new sound that is very refreshing and powerful. One fan on myspace music commented when hearing Ariah:"This is like a modern day Joni Mitchell." Ariah couldn't be more please with the comparison.
