Description
Civic Studies: Dedicated to Rachel, four-year old daughter of a drug dealer living in poverty in rural America. May she grow up to a better world.
It's an election year (1996) and we've heard lots of BS about this guy being a Washington outsider and that guy being a Washington insider. We though it was about time to hear the voice of those who actually live *Inside the Beltway*. The truest measure of any society is how it treats the least of its members. Next we hear the anger of the disabled man who feels that he is treated as a *Boy Phoney* and the homeless man who asks "What's wrong with America?" and seeks reality in the *Breadline*. We put these concerns in a broader context in a prayer to the American goddess, *Mother Liberty*. Then in *Burdick Street* we hear the frustrations of living in public housing, where one is treated as if one had no civil liberties. One might think that all these problems would go away if one just had job. But no... With corporate down-sizing and CEOs who think a year is a long time to plan, employers are asking more and more of the employees for less and less real pay. It's gotten so bad that sometimes we are asked to do impossible things, for example *Walk Like a Fish*. We are pleased to see the civil war in the Balkans winding down, but there are still problems. *Bosnia* is our offering for that country's national anthem. We expect it to top the charts in Yugoslavia. On the up side, sometimes we're reminded of why we put up with all this BS. We wrote *Rachel's Ballet* for a wonderful little four-year-old, who gives us hope for the future. (But don't play it backwards - it might hurt your self-esteem.)
