Description
Boka Marimba is a nine-member dance band that plays exhilarating, positive-energy music from Zimbabwe and other areas of southeastern Africa.
The music is in the Shona style: Melodic themes and variations layered in polyrhythmic, cyclic patterns. The songs are sung in the Shona language.
The band's instrumentation consists of seven marimbas (three sopranos, two tenors, a baritone, and a bass), gourd shakers called hosho, mbira ("thumb piano"), drums and percussion.
Fifteen years and some 30 members later, Boka keeps on beating the heart of Zimbabwean music in the Pacific Northwest. The sheer pleasure of playing is the glue that bonds the band together, and the desire to share this music with others is the fuel that fires Boka Marimba.
In Shona, Zviri Kufamba Zvishoma is a humble way of saying "we're keeping on...bit by bit...".
The Zviri Kufamba Zvishoma CD reflects the chemistry and creativity of the band when recorded in 2001, building upon the tradition established by the previous members and teachers of the band.
Our praise and thanks to those who have gone before us.
We keep on... Boka Marimba
