Description
This CD comprises of Matt Cutillo and 4 German musicians back in 1996-97 at the beginning of Matt's rebirth as a music-making traveleing institution. There was no mistake - the road was the destination at that time. Having left NY for Germany in 1994 and played in numerous projects and solo formations this was the first band Matt ever officially wrote for as a guitarist and singer.
It all started with Sax-man Hans Gunthard Schleipen geborener Kaul, who Matt met through singer/songwriter Ulli Veith, a housemate in the Roedererstrasse 15 dormatory in Goettingen, Germany. Veith had quickly left the band due to a strong bond between Cutillo and Kaul and the two went on playing as the band "ROBIN AND THE NEW HOODS" as a duo act - and Hans-Gunthard, or Gunnar as we knew him, started up the 1st Intergalaktik Turbonuclear Party - where we met up with former EATEN BY SHEIKS bandmate bassist Matthias Prellwitz - who instantly thought Cutillo was an a**hole - and luckily upon further examination reconsidered and became a band member. Drummer Juergen Fleig from Karlsruhe also just popped up at that same party and expressed interest in meeting friends in a strange town; and former member of the local punk band THE CHOICE keyboardist Uli Hacker had also been scouted by Kaul in the local music bar NOERGELBUFF.
So Kaul went on to buy a MERCEDES STRICHACHTER AMBULANCE which he named our band after - LINE8 = Strich - achter - straight-eight in English but who's counting - it made for good art. Incorrect translation and "bad" English makes for good clichee destruction and new word-combinations for songwriting...and having spoken only German for 2 years at that time, Cutillo himself was changing. Being permanently in contact with broken English speakers and speaking broken German himself, his whole outlook and personality were being re-molded. Matt's pouring full beers down his pants for kicks in public was not widely accepted (does anyone do that in the USA??) and Kaul's babbling only slightly less than the fishmarket-screaming auctioneer on the Hamburg Docks (as the Goettinger Tageblatt had so eloquently printed) made for good entertainment - at least for a while -
So in this LINE8 moblie they cruised around town, made friends and carried equipment from concert to concert singing songs and having parties. The local musicians mostly hated us for how much fun we had with people and how much the public loved us. PERFECT!! We were not the tightest band, and we DID NOT CARE! We had a great big band sound and an all-including non-excluding unifying spirit - til love turned from GOOD TIMES track 1 our first song on the CD to BAD TIMES track 8 on the CD...
Kaul's excessive craziness had turned from light-hearted to wicked and the band threw him out after a long painful and stressful time of consideration. No one wanted to kick him out but it had to be - the band played and wrote the last tracks 8-12 on this album after kicking him - which he never forgave anyone for and remains bitter to this day...
Hacker's 60's VOX/KORG keyboards could have stood on the corner of Haight-Ashbury - with real 120lb rotary Leslie cabinet amplification this man commanded a wall of sound and gave the band it's distict hippie sound...Gunnar Kaul is a talented whirling dirvish ball of energy on stage - much too much at times - but blowing really good sax when he's in a good mood...Matthias "PUT THE BASS IN YOUR FACE" Prellwitz had foot-stomping, walking bass with worn-out shoes that was almost ALMOST too heavy for the very small, musically talented man from Bad Gandersheim, Germany. Drummer Juergen Fleig built his own "FIRING RANGE" drumkit as he called it - a cage of toms and crash cymbals and double bass kick pedal and was the only one of us with real full-time employment! Matt Cutillo was and is the one with the big mouth and biceps pounding on his semi-acoustic Washburn 6 string bringing you the the front man persona you wanted - big, friendly and outgoing...
All in all this psychadelic 60's sound band of freedom rock post-neo-hippies was a wonderful time of expression and discovery for all -
