Description
The sonic voyage continues with "Frontier of Darkness," the second album from Jovian Oblivion. This time around, the music is more polished and sophisticated but still retains the raw, rocking energy and dynamic diversity for which Jovian Oblivion is known. Production on “Frontier of Darkness” started one month after the completion of the 1st Jovian Oblivion album, “Eye of the Mind” in July of 2005. Unlike the first album, which was Brent Matney exclusively performing all instruments and vocals… “Frontier of Darkness” features contributions of several different musicians on 5 of the 15 tracks. All of these songs were created pure and free in the sanctuary of Brent Matney’s project recording studio… far, far away from the evil influences of money, fakeness and greed.
“Frontier of Darkness” is a diverse collection of songs ranging from moody, sinister instrumentals to ranting, poetic melodies of angst and torment. Some of the songs strike out with melodic belligerence such as “Banish Me” “Do Not Rebel” & “Frailty.” Other tracks, like “Callisto Awaits” “The Mask Behind the Face” “Spacin’” & “Somnium (On Luna)” establish a spooky dream-like ambiance throughout. And of course, no Jovian Oblivion album would be complete without the political rhetoric included in the songs, “Calm Before the Storm” “Evil Man” & “How Many More Wars?” “Blue Dot” is a foray into the hot topic of the environment, foreshadowing an eventual apocalypse despite frantic warnings from groups who are attempting to save the Earth and it’s eco-system. “Window Pane” tells a bleak story of an unfortunate person who is suffering from extreme paranoia and slowly going insane, while the progressive rock-natured, “Breath’s Width,” expresses suicidal thoughts after a bad ending to a long romantic relationship. “Ego Enabled” features some heavy blues-riffing and raucous vocals in an odd 5/4 time signature. If you are looking for the same-old, predictable, formulaic, monotonous, mainstream rock music that is prevalent on today's modern rock stations and MTV, then look elsewhere. But, if you want to hear fresh, innovative, 21st Century rock'n'roll as it should be... then look no further than Jovian Oblivion.
Some of the guest musicians on “Frontier of Darkness” include Joe Berkley, drummer of the The Sky Remembers and Dave Delida bassist of The Sky Remembers. Joe wrote the lyrics for “Breath’s Width” while Dave played bass on “Frailty” and “How Many More Wars?” The Sky Remembers currently has a CD for sale here on CDBABY. Jean Roca provided the guitar tracks for “Evil Man” and Jesse Baer furnished the background music for the psychedelic instrumental, “Spacin’.” Jean Roca also has a CD for sale here on CDBABY.
