Description
META (met-uh) adj./pf.-
1) originally a Greek preposition, now employed by English-speaking
philosophers as a prefix. The usual meaning is 'about' as in meta-ethics,
metahistory, and metalanguage; the connotation being self-reference. 2)
taken alone, anything beyond the natural, 'first-level' point of view;
'behind the surface'. 3) 'after': Aristotle's Metaphysics, and hence
later its subject, was so called because it followed the Physics.
As a songwriter, I'm interested in exploring things that are beyond the surface, beyond normal understanding, and sometimes beyond my own experience. So this collection of songs touches on contradiction, belief and prejudice, romance and its disillusions, and the story of a man stealing a boat, being lost at sea, and praying to a Norse god personified by a star. We've heard this all a thousand times, am I right?
Anyhow, all those subjects are brought to you by terrific players Mark Nemer, Derrick Horne, Craig Weaver, and Kendall Combs. This disc, I'm told, is stylistically comparable to Sheryl Crow, Sting, Joshua Tree-era U2, and Bruce Hornsby. I'll take those comparisons! Hope you enjoy it.
