Description
To synthesize, yet remain true to one's core is a tough line to walk.Stephen Lomas has done this. Having made his home for so long in California, he assumed its' mystic anything-is-possible vision & combined it with the ethic of his native Australia.
The results are strong, substantive songs driven by a percussive guitar accompaniament, mirroring a depth of experience portrayed with integrity. Within his music you will find the honesty of traditional folk, the insight of Dylan & the funky swagger of The Pogues, The Band & maybe a bit of Tom Petty....
Not to be considered as background music, Stephen's song writing should be seen more as visual art - color & light - borne by words more spoken than sung & a magic guitar pallete infused with open tunings & a shimmering slide technique.
So where does Stephen Lomas fit within the musical landscape? Sometimes it seems that every hill & rise has been claimed by some new flag - pop/rock/alternative/country/world music/new age/adult contemporary - the list is endless. With musical heroes such as Martin Simpson, David Lindley, the Stones, Tom Waits, The Band & the ever present Bob Dylan, Stephen acknowledges them all. He describes his style simply as folk+plus - "more than Lemon Tree, less than Metallica!"
In late 2004 Stephen Lomas returned permanently to Australia.l
